Poe Powers Way to Pair of Wins at Timonium ST
By Len and Ben Breech
TIMONIUM, MD. AUG. 9
After losing a 250 B final for the first time the previous Friday, Michael Poe roared back with another pair of wins in the 250 B and Open B Stock framed classes. After enduring sweltering conditions over the first three weeks of the Baltimore County Trail Riders/Cockeysville Optimist Club sponsored races, weather definitely started to cool down as the series headed into its final week. Poe jumped out to his usual holeshot, with Sam Wiggins, John Long, Derek Hersh and Tyler Kidwell close behind. When Long got by Wiggins on the second lap into three the top five were set, although Kidwell kept pounding on Hersh for fourth.

In the Open B Stock framed final, Poe ran away from Bill Kraft, Gary Jenkins, Dalton Winkler and Mike Standiford. Jenkins began to drop back as Winkler and Standiford tried to force Kraft into a mistake. This time, old age and treachery won out over youthful enthusiasm as Kraft held on for second.
After winning three classes the previous, Don Mullen II saw a chance for a repeat end up on the sand surface during the Open A Stock framed heat. He stayed up in the Sportsman and Open A Modified frame heats and took both classes. The Sportsman final saw Brandon Robinson lead Mullen, Chris Klinefelter and Jason Isennock out of two. Mullen succeeded in getting the Rich Mellinger Yamaha under Robinson as they entered three on lap two for the lead. Isennock took third on the third lap as the top four stayed close the rest of the way.

The Open A Modified frame had Robinson leading Isennock, Mullen, Klinefelter and Corey Hormes. Isennock took first out of two on the second lap, while Mullen used the outside line to take the lead off two on the fourth lap. Once in front, Mullen pulled away until the race was red flagged for a crash two laps from the end.
Klinefelter put his Williamson Honda sponsored Honda in the Open A Stock framed lead from Robinson, Hormes and Nick Henderson. Robinson stayed close, but the order stayed the same to the end.
Many of the other classes were close affairs. In the 50s, Ryan Rassa took the holeshot from normal holeshoter Shawn Rothstein. Rothstein was very close in the mid-part of the race, but had a little trouble in lapped riders. Rothstein grabbed the 50 Oil Injected final from Chase Smith and Graham Hyde and held off Smith for the win. The 50 four stroke had Cameron Smith challenging Dustin Healey late in the race for the win. Austin Johnston led Robby Smith and Brando Johnston at the start of the 50 (7-8) final with Smith taking first into three on lap three. Johnston stayed close to the end.

Jeremiah Snow grabbed the 65 lead from Colton Smith, Joey Schmidt and Smith. By the time Schmidt took second on the second lap, Snow had started building a lead and stayed upright for the win. For once, Dan Bromley had to work for his usual 100 Youth and 85 (7-11) wins. In the 100 Youth, Taylor Isennock looked poised for a major upset, as he led the Bromleys Suzuki sponsored Bromley almost the entire way. Almost. Bromley slipped into the lead off the final turn for the win. The 85s were combined with the 7-11 group on the third line. The 12-15 group were in the top three with Joey Alexander, Dalton Winkler and Jacob Cranston in front of Bromley. Bromley sliced his way to the front, taking first overall off two on lap four.
Scott Saunders held off Dave Smith for the 40 + win, while Brian Eckhart, Mike Mester and Clarence Bull battled for third. Rich Mellinger grabbed the 30 + lead and let Ken Godwin and Chris Hathaway battle for second. Mike Standiford kept his Open B Modified frame class win perfect easily beating Bill Snodgrass, Jeff McManus and Frank Valentin for the win. John Long easily won the 125, with Dale Verzi holding off Joey Parks for the Adult 100 win.
