Enduro Ride Report

October 29, 2000 Delaware Enduro

Delaware Enduro Riders

Delaware City, Delaware

This event was not a National enduro this year and the hosting club promised a reasonable ride for everyone. They pulled it off with excellent results, which showed much hard work!! Fantastic trails and fast speed averages made for an exciting event with an early keytime of 7:00 am.

The weather was excellent, providing dry conditions for one of the best events of the year.

Delaware is famous for the "fields of frag" and "THE SLUICE" which were both part of the course again this year in the time honored tradition. "THE SLUICE", which was run uphill this year, is a rocky stream bed in a series of dike drainages. It quickly proved to be challenging to more than one rider, and a source of frustration to those more experienced riders who waited their turn while other riders pushed and tugged their way through this challenge. Alot of fun, but not as fun as the frag!!!

Fragmites reed beds are 6 foot tall reeds bunched very tightly together in deep sandy soil. They are a natural and protected part of the watershed in the area. The club is allowed to run events twice a year through the wetlands, which provides them and us a unique opportunity to ride. I can only shudder what the event would have been like had it rained. I fear any rain would have turned the "fields of frag" into "fields of woe".

In any event, it was great riding and all of the terrain was rideable. All entrants recieved a beautiful hat and finishers recieved embroidered commemorative finisher patches. Olympic style medals were awarded deep into the classes as trophies , showing that the Delaware Enduro Riders care about the sport I love and are continuing to set the benchmark standard, keeping enduro riding the best bang for your buck once again for dirt bike racing.

District 7 riders Griff Drew (3rd Place C) rode the 4-stroke C class on the indestructible YZ-WR400F along with Eric Johnson who brought out his new KTM-400 4stroke. Both riders consistently spared grins and a "Thank You" as they passed yours truly intrepid enduro reporter from three rows back after every reset. Not ones to be able to resist a little ribbing, I didn't bother to point out that I was enjoying the scenery and stopping to snap photos, running on two flats, with no brakes or clutch. Yeah, that's it, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

A GREAT event to finish up a great season!

Well, our season is behind us for 2000. 10 exciting races from sand to rocks, easy to hard, we had it all!!! Going into Delaware, several Class Champions were wrapped up, with others still charging hard. One of these was in the Womens Division, where Kathi Cambell, after a rough start early in the day, rallied to take 1st place points in the women's class. Kathi gained just enough District 7 series points at the Delaware Enduro to pass Evelyn Sullivan in the points standings. Evelyn had been leading the points standings going into the final round 10 of the series, where she missed a cut-off sign and rode the long course of Delaware, dropping many more points than her female competitors through some tough sections. It was a tough break for Evelyn who has proven to be a fierce competitor this year in the enduro series and proved it by bringing home second place honors!! Great jobs and congratulations to Kathi and Evelyn!

Jeff Johns who had been leading the A class points series broke his leg in mid season and had to miss the Beehive enduro. Mike Sigety, his competition, gained a 4th place finish points at Beehive. Things got worse for Jeff at the next event, the Michaux enduro, where with Jeff working, and Mike racing and winning, Mike gained a comfortable margin in the overall points standings. But along comes the Delaware Enduro! Jeff healed up and after spending a month gnawing the bark off of trees in frustration, came to Delaware on a hunt for redemption. Jeff charged for a 1st place A-200 class finish and third overall score of 29 points at Delaware, netting another 20 points in the D7 series, but it wasn't enough to catch Mike, who also raced Delaware and brings home Grand Champion honors in the series this year! Congratulations Mike and Jeff on a GREAT season that was FUN to watch!

One final news note. After our first season on the internet, Our website moved to http://www.enduro.4t.com

Looking forward to seeing you on the trails next year at the Curly Fern Enduro, March 18th, 2001!
